The Clan Challenge:

The Challenges afford Clans an opportunity to foster camaraderie and are designed to offer a good-natured outlet for Clan rivalry through fun “semi-athletic” events. The Clan Challenges are an outgrowth of our very popular Ladies Clan Team Haggis Hurl, of years past. This year, the Clan Challenge will include three events: "St. Andrew's Golf," "Highland Darts," and "The Ladies Clan Team Haggis Hurl." Although the winning clan will be that clan that has the highest total score from all three events, clans are not required to participate in all competitions.  Consequently, clans can field teams in none, one, two, or all three events. However, the over-all winner will be the Clan with the highest total score from all three events. Here are the descriptions of Each Event:

St. Andrew's Putting Competition:

This exciting event is made up of teams of three members representing their clan.  The team can be all male, all female, or “coed.” This event is based upon the ability of the team members to try and sink a putt. Each contestant will have a practice putt and then a putt for record.  The total clan score will be the cumulative distance from the hole for the record putts. Obviously, a team member who sinks the put will get a "zero," while the distance from the hole for the other members will be measured and recorded. This cumulative score will be used to determine the winning clan for the event: The clan team with the lowest cumulative score will be declared the winner.  The winning clan receives a certificate in recognition of its victory and the points for each participating clan are applied to the clan’s overall challenge score. Entry fee is $1.00 for each team

Highland Darts – (Dart throw)

Highland Dart teams are comprised of three members: Lads, Lassies or co-ed. This event will be laid out in regulation darts manner and each contestant will throw three darts at the board. The total Clan score will be the cumulative total score of all team members, based upon the strike of the darts on a standard dartboard. This score will be used to determine the winning Clan for the event. The winning Clan receives a certificate in recognition of its victory and the points for each participating Clan are applied to the Clan's overall challenge score. Entry fee is $1.00 for each team.

Ladies Clan Team Haggis Hurl

Ladies Clan Haggis Hurl teams will be composed of three Lassies. Each team will endeavor to hurl the "haggis" for the greatest cumulative distance. Team members will have the opportunity for a practice throw and then a throw for record. The total score will be the cumulative yardage of the for-record throws of all team members.  Since this has been such a popular event in the past, clans are authorized to form additional teams to join in the competition.  The record number of teams for a single clan in recent years is three separate teams.  The Clan team with the largest total yard score will be declared the winner. The winning Clan receives a certificate in recognition of its victory. The points for each participating Clan are applied to the Clan's overall challenge score. Entry Fee is $1.00 for each team.

Clan Challenge Winning Clan:

The results of all three events will be totaled. The Clan with the highest cumulative score wins the challenge and "bragging rights" for next year's Festival. The winning Clan also receives the beautiful Williamsburg Scottish Festival and Celtic Celebration “Clan Challenge Plaque” in recognition of its victory for 2008.

Other Clan Competition:

Lord Dunmore Scottish Heritage Award.

For the twenty-fifth year, the WSF will present the Lord Dunmore Scottish Heritage Award. This award recognizes the Clan organization or Scottish society that most accurately and attractively portrays our Scottish heritage. Last year this prestigious award went to Clan Shaw. A committee composed of the honored guest; the WSF president, and the Clan Coordinator makes the selection. The winning organization receives a beautiful plaque that commemorates the victory.
